The decision to replace David Moyes with Julen Lopetegui at West Ham United has proved far from a masterstroke so far, with the Hammers managing just eight points from as many matches in the Premier League this season (W2, D2, L4). A disastrous performance in a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham last week left the Spaniard “very disappointed” and facing an inquest from disgruntled fans.

West Ham United did manage to win their last home game against Ipswich by the same scoreline, presenting them with the chance to secure back-to-back league victories at the London Stadium for the first time since December. The second win in that sequence came against Manchester United, and having won the last two H2Hs on this ground ‘to nil’, the hosts could now keep three consecutive home clean sheets against United for the first time in their league history.

Both of those previous shutouts came under Erik ten Hag’s stewardship, and the relenting pressure on the Dutchman’s position at Old Trafford wasn’t helped by another UEFA Europa League draw on Thursday (1-1). Manchester United surrendered the lead for the third time in as many European games against Fenerbahçe as their wait for a win on the continent reached a full 12 months, but their struggles aren’t limited to Europe.

Manchester United have won just four of their 13 matches across all competitions so far this season (D5, L4), leaving them sat in the bottom half of both the Premier League and Europa League tables. Ten Hag therefore badly needs his side to improve on a return of just two wins from their last 17 top-flight matches in London (D5, L10), but concerningly, the Red Devils have lost more Premier League games in eight visits to the London Stadium (four) than they did in 20 to Upton Park (three).

Players to watch: With Mohammed Kudus suspended, more of West Ham’s attacking burden falls on Jarrod Bowen. He scored a second-half opener in this fixture last season, while all three of his strikes this term have also come after the break. The visitors will welcome captain Bruno Fernandes back from a midweek suspension as he looks to end a 12-match scoring drought against West Ham – the most he’s faced any one opponent without scoring for Manchester United.
