The Premier League returns with a must-win clash for West Ham United, who know three points against bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers would see them climb out of the bottom three. None of the last 16 Premier League H2Hs have been drawn, with West Ham winning on the last five occasions they hosted Wolverhampton Wanderers in the top flight. Wolves have beaten the Hammers twice already this season though across league and cup. West Ham have scored 13 of their 18 home league goals this season before half-time.
After suffering the disappointment of a penalty defeat at home to Leeds in the FA Cup quarter-final, West Ham United must quickly switch their focus back to avoiding a first relegation since 2010/11. The Hammers reside in the bottom three with seven games remaining, but just a point separates them from safety, so they’re still firmly in the survival hunt. One win in six league games (D3, L2) hardly fuels belief they’ll get the three points necessary to provisionally climb out of the relegation zone here, and their top-flight form at the London Stadium since the end of November makes for even bleaker reading (W1, D4, L4), even if they are unbeaten in four such games there (W1, D3).
A whopping 13 points adrift of safety, it’s now just a matter of time before Wolves’ relegation to the Championship is confirmed. They’re not going down without a fight though, as Rob Edwards’ men are unbeaten in three league matches (W2, D1), but both victories coming at Molineux is no real surprise given the struggles they’ve faced on the road this season. Wolverhampton Wanderers are the only side yet to win a Premier League away game this season (D5, L10), a record which reinforces the size of the task at hand for a side who’ve won just one of their last seven Friday-held matches (D2, L4).
Only Burnley have faced more shots in the Premier League than West Ham United (473) this campaign. Wolves have committed a league-high 409 fouls this term. Wolverhampton Wanderers are the only Premier League side yet to score an away goal before the 30th minute this season.
West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen has scored a career-high six Premier League goals against Wolves, netting in each of the last three H2Hs West Ham United hosted. Wolves’ Tolu Arokodare has seen his last four goals against top-flight opposition come against sides from London, while his last 14 club goals arrived after half-time.
Alphonse Areola picked up an injury against Leeds last weekend, but West Ham United should be boosted by the return of Crysencio Summerville and Konstantinos Mavropanos here. Wolverhampton Wanderers appear to be close to full strength.
