Real Madrid will look to get their La Liga title bid on track with a rare Friday outing against Girona, who are quickly back in action after beating Villarreal 1-0 on Monday. Real Madrid are unbeaten across the last five H2H meetings (W4, D1) with all four of those wins coming with a clean sheet, whilst they’ve suffered only one H2H defeat at home (W4, D1). Real Madrid haven’t lost a league fixture played on a Friday since May 2002 (W7, D1).
Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Mallorca last weekend was a huge blow for their title chances, and now sitting seven points behind Barcelona, they can hardly afford to drop any more points if they are to realise their ambition of claiming their 37th La Liga crown. One of few positives was a goalscoring return from injury for Éder Militão, while Jude Bellingham also got useful minutes, but Los Blancos’ defensive woes continued with them conceding for a seventh consecutive league fixture, which they followed up with a 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday. Álvaro Arbeloa’s side have recorded only one league clean sheet here this calendar year (W6, L1), suggesting it might not be plain sailing against Girona.
The visitors likely won’t make things easy for them as they arrive at the Bernabéu having won two of their last three league games without conceding (L1) to help them move further away from relegation danger and keep alive their chances of European qualification. Head coach Míchel continues to bat away speculation linking him with the Ajax job with his focus on Girona’s late season push for a top-half finish, which will need them to improve on the road where they are winless across their last five away La Liga fixtures (D3, L2), despite conceding exactly once in four of those outings.
Real Madrid have scored 2+ goals in seven of their last eight home La Liga games. Two Girona players were booked in four of their last six league matches. Girona possess La Liga’s best first-half record away from home this term (HT: W6, D6, L3).
Jude Bellingham, who has already scored four times for Real Madrid against Girona, has netted four of his six goals this term between the 35th and 60th minutes. Azzedine Ounahi is unbeaten in 15 club games when scoring (W10, D5), four of which were for Girona and one of which came in the reverse H2H (D 1-1).
Real Madrid’s Franco Mastantuono is suspended after being booked against Mallorca while Girona’s Daley Blind was withdrawn in the second half against Villarreal due to injury.
