A blockbuster weekend of football concludes with all eyes on the Spanish capital as Real Madrid host neighbours Atlético Madrid in the latest chapter of the Madrid derby. Atlético Madrid are chasing what would be just their fifth La Liga double over Real Madrid after a 5-2 win in the reverse fixture, while Real Madrid are hoping to avoid going seven La Liga matches without victory against their neighbours for the first time ever (D4, L2). Four of Real’s last five La Liga matches saw both teams score.

Real Madrid once again flexed their midweek muscles in Europe with a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate win over Manchester City, but must now switch their focus back to their pursuit of La Liga leaders Barcelona whom they trail by four points prior to the weekend. That deficit was built when they suffered rare back to back league defeats to Osasuna and Getafe not so long ago, but wins in their two most recent La Liga games show Los Blancos won’t give up the chase. The Bernabéu feels like the perfect venue to keep up the pressure on the leaders as, following their 4-1 demolition of Elche in the last round, Real Madrid have now won 20 of their last 23 home matches (L3).

Atlético Madrid also shone on the continental stage, securing an entertaining 7-5 aggregate triumph over Tottenham despite losing 3-2 away from home in midweek. With a top four finish close to guaranteed, their La Liga objective should be to close the nine point gap between them and their neighbours, which has shrunk recently thanks to a four game winning streak in the top flight. That fruitful run opposes Atléti’s recent away record which features just one win in their last five competitive road trips (D1, L3), which isn’t the sort of form Diego Simeone would’ve been hoping to take into his 50th Madrid derby (W14, D17, L18).

Six of Real’s last seven competitive home games featured over 2.5 goals. Atlético Madrid have trailed at half-time just twice this La Liga season (HT: W9, D17). Atlético Madrid have scored first a league-high 23 times this term.

Vinícius Júnior’s brace in midweek, coupled with 12 of his last 15 La Liga goals coming at home, means he might finally score his first league goal against Atleti at the 13th time of asking. Atlético’s Julián Alvarez also had a productive European tie with five goal contributions against Tottenham (G3, A2) and, after his brace in the reverse fixture, will be eyeing up his sixth goal against Los Blancos.

Both sides could be missing their first choice goalkeepers since Real’s Thibaut Courtois and Atlético’s Jan Oblak have both suffered injuries lately.
