Atlético Madrid and Real Sociedad will meet in the 2025/26 Copa del Rey final in Seville with both clubs ending fairly long waits for their return to this stage. Atletico Madrid are unbeaten across the last nine H2Hs (W6, D3), although Real Sociedad have won three of the last four meetings in this competition (L1), with the first of those victories being their penalty shootout triumph in the 1986/87 final. There was a goal scored before the 20th minute in three of Atlético’s five Copa del Rey games this term.

Atletico Madrid are approaching their first Copa del Rey final since winning the competition for a tenth time in 2012/13 in some pretty poor form. While they advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in dramatic circumstances on Tuesday, their 2-1 second leg defeat to Barcelona was their fifth loss from their last six games in all competitions. With a top four position in La Liga virtually assured, Los Colchoneros have been able to negotiate multiple tournaments by rotating their squad, and bring into this final plenty of excellent Copa del Rey performances that include four wins from five matches (L1), three of which were with a clean sheet.

This is Real Sociedad’s first appearance in the final since they beat rivals Athletic Bilbao 1-0 in the pandemic-delayed 2019/20 showpiece, making it their first with fans present since 1987/88 (L 1-0 vs Barcelona). The two time Copa del Rey champions carry reasonable form into this fixture after drawing 3-3 with Alavés at the weekend, a side they also beat 3-2 in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, and have won four of their last seven games in all competitions (D1, L2). La Real have had to battle harder and for much longer than their opponents to get here (W7), with four of the last five of those wins by one goal margins and the other secured on penalties.

A red card was shown in four of Atlético’s last five competitive fixtures. Four of Real Sociedad’s last five competitive fixtures produced over 3.5 goals, including the latest H2H. Real Sociedad have scored 14 Copa del Rey goals this season, 11 (79%) of which came after half-time.

Antoine Griezmann has scored five Copa del Rey goals this season, with three of those strikes arriving between the 60th and 75th minutes. Beñat Turrientes is Real Sociedad’s leading Copa del Rey scorer this term and may also make a late impact, with each of his three goals coming after the 60th minute.

Jan Oblak is sidelined for Atletico Madrid, as are Real Sociedad pair Jon Gorrotxategi and Álvaro Odriozola.
