Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) qualification ambitions hang by a thread when they host direct rivals Manchester United, who remain in a strong position despite a shock defeat on Monday. Manchester United are chasing just their second-ever winning double over Chelsea in the Premier League after a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture. They’ve managed just one win in 12 league visits to Stamford Bridge though (D5, L6), and could lose three in succession here for the first time since April 2006.

Liam Rosenior finds himself under serious pressure at Chelsea after a damaging run of three successive losses without scoring in the Premier League. The Blues sit four points adrift of the UCL spots after Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat against Manchester City which served as their sixth loss since the start of March, more than any other side across Europe’s top-five leagues in all competitions ahead of this round. Just one win in six outings at Stamford Bridge (D2, L3) that sole victory coming against third tier Port Vale offers scant hope for Chelsea here, who could lose four straight league games without scoring at any venue for the first time since March 1998.

That sequence included a home defeat to Manchester United, who’ll be desperate for a repeat outcome after they returned from a 24-day lay off to lose 2-1 at home to Leeds. Boss Michael Carrick was scathing in his criticism of the officials, but the Red Devils’ first half performance in particular displayed plenty of rust which they’ll have to shake off if they’re to avoid suffering back to back Premier League defeats for the first time this season. Manchester United’s two losses in their last four league outings (W1, D1) are as many as they suffered in their prior 22 such fixtures (W12, D8), and a return of just one clean sheet in 21 away league fixtures would indicate their forwards will need to fire if they’re to win here.

Chelsea are winless against the pre round top three in the league this season (D2, L3). Chelsea have failed to win six of the 11 home league games they scored first in this term (D3, L3). A pre round joint league high nine Manchester United away games stood level at half time (HT: W3, L4). Manchester United have scored in 14 successive competitive away games.

Enzo Fernández’s expected return from a club enforced absence is timely as no Chelsea player has created more chances (51) or attempted more shots on target (27) than him in the Premier League this term. Casemiro was sent off in the reverse fixture after scoring for the third time in six league H2Hs against Chelsea, six of his Premier League strikes this term have been assisted by Bruno Fernandes.

Chelsea remain without Reece James, while suspensions to Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez leave Manchester United light at the heart of defence.
