The shadow of Inter Milan’s upcoming Coppa Italia semi-final second leg is unlikely to offer Cagliari much of an opening at San Siro, as the hosts remain focused on extending their home momentum in Serie A. Inter’s 2-0 win in September extended their unbeaten run to 12 H2Hs (W10, D2). Cagliari’s last away victory in this fixture came in October 2016, and they have lost six of the eight such games since (D2). In a league-high 17 matches, Inter have scored exactly one first-half goal this season.

On a matchday that saw both their nearest title challengers drop points, Inter came from 2-0 down to defeat Como 4-3 on Sunday and move nine points clear at the top of Serie A with just six rounds of fixtures remaining. It marked their first pair of back-to-back victories across all competitions since mid-February, a vital result for the Nerazzurri after a four-game winless streak in March (D3, L1) threatened to derail their domestic ambitions. Their commanding lead in the top flight provides head coach Cristian Chivu with the luxury of rotation ahead of next week’s Coppa Italia return leg against Como. Maintaining their form at San Siro remains a priority though, with Inter currently boasting a nine-match unbeaten league run (W7, D2) on home turf.

Cagliari beat Cremonese 1-0 last Saturday in a vital relegation clash, moving six points clear of danger in the process. The Islanders ended a demoralising eight-game winless sequence (D2, L6) with that victory, but their record this season against Serie A’s elite is unsurprisingly poor, as they have lost all four such league encounters against the division’s current top three without scoring. While they have found the net in eight of their last ten top-flight away trips, a run of three defeats in their last four games on the road (D1) will likely have dampened their expectations of registering a shock result at San Siro.

Inter have not received a red card in their last 41 Serie A games. Cagliari are the only team in Serie A yet to score inside 20 minutes this season. A league-high 11 of Cagliari’s away games this season have seen both teams score.

Marcus Thuram has got Inter’s second goal of the match in three of his last four scoring appearances for the club, including against Como. On loan from Inter, Sebastiano Esposito could precede him on the scoresheet, as three of his last four Serie A goals have made it 1-0, including Cagliari’s last two.

Petar Sučić is suspended for Inter, while Luca Mazzitelli went off injured for Cagliari against Cremonese.
