The Copa del Rey quarter-finals bring together two multi-time winners in Valencia and Athletic Club, with both looking for respite from poor La Liga campaigns. Valencia won the most recent H2H 2-0 on this ground in September, but Athletic were victorious in five of the seven meetings prior (D1, L1). Just one of Athletic’s last ten fixtures was decided by a 2+ goal margin.

Eight-time winners of the Copa del Rey Valencia come into this last-eight clash bruised after giving up the lead in a 2-1 loss to Real Betis on Sunday. As that was just a second defeat in eight matches in all competitions (W4, D2), manager Carlos Corberán will hope his side are strong enough to bounce back on home turf at the Mestalla, where they haven’t lost since October (W2, D4). All four of Hugo Duro’s H2H goals against Athletic have arrived after half-time, while his last four Valencia strikes have all come at home. Athletic’s Álex Berenguer has netted three times previously against Valencia, the most recent of which came on this ground in May and forms part of a streak that’s seen his last four goals serve as the match opener.

José Copete is a doubt for Valencia, while Athletic’s long list of absentees now includes Oihan Sancet, who missed their last match.
