Athletic Bilbao will look to use their overdue weekend La Liga win as a springboard to turning their season around, starting with this Basque derby in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against in-form Real Sociedad. Athletic Bilbao hosted Real Sociedad in La Liga earlier this month, continuing a three-game winless H2H run (D2, L1) with a 1-1 draw. They haven’t lost at home to Real Sociedad in any competition since 2020/21 (W4, D1).

Athletic Club have had it anything but easy in this edition of the tournament, most recently needing a 96th-minute winner from Iñaki Williams to get past Valencia and avoid the extra time period that lower-tier sides Leonesa and Ourense forced on them in earlier rounds. This will already be their 11th competitive fixture of 2026, and whilst the busy calendar had been taking a toll on their La Liga campaign until the weekend just gone (W 4-2 at home to Levante), Athletic Bilbao at least continue to have sustained success in this competition, with the 2023/24 champions winning 12 of their last 13 Copa del Rey fixtures.

Real Sociedad bring into this tie the advantage of a slightly quieter schedule in 2026, an additional day of rest since their weekend La Liga victory, and perhaps most importantly a vastly superior formline. Their squad depth was tested by collecting red cards in three consecutive La Liga games earlier this calendar year, but it has been passed with flying colours, as Real Sociedad are on a ten-game unbeaten run in all competitions (W7, D3), including their three most recent Copa del Rey victories. Their attacking unit continues to drive their success and take the pressure off a defence that is now 19 consecutive competitive games against top-flight clubs without a clean sheet, and a staggering 27 such fixtures on the road.

Four of Athletic’s last six Copa del Rey matches went into extra time. Athletic’s last eight games in all competitions saw both teams score. Five of Real Sociedad’s last six Copa del Rey games produced over 2.5 goals. Real Sociedad’s last 11 competitive matches saw both teams score.

With seven goals and an assist in his last nine competitive matches, Gorka Guruzeta looks set to be Athletic’s danger man again. Orri Óskarsson is one player who deserves more game time in this tie, scoring off the bench in each of Real Sociedad’s last two games despite playing only a combined 26 minutes across the games.

Yuri Berchiche went off injured at the weekend, joining Dani Vivian and Álex Berenguer on Athletic’s injury list. Real Sociedad’s Luka Sučić was injured after scoring at the weekend.
