Two of La Liga’s most famous sides meet at the quarter-final stage of the Copa del Rey, as a confident Real Betis look to knock ten-time champions Atlético Madrid out of the competition. Betis have won just one of their last 13 H2Hs across all competitions (D2, L10), scoring only three goals in their last six. Atlético won just three of their last 16 Copa del Rey matches against top-flight opposition.
After winning the Copa del Rey in 1977, 2005 and most recently in 2022, Betis will be aiming to take a huge step towards claiming a fourth such title. This fixture comes hot on the heels of their 2-1 La Liga victory over Valencia at the weekend, a result which highlighted their resilience as they came from a goal down to win late on. Head coach Manuel Pellegrini will hope that his side can show that spirit again here after five successive home victories, as Los Verdiblancos now look to progress from a third quarter-final tie in four such attempts in this competition.
Standing in the hosts’ way this time round are Atlético, who enter this cup clash a little out of sorts. After being embarrassed on home soil in the UEFA Champions League by minnows Bodø/Glimt in a 2-1 loss last Wednesday, the capital club then drew 0-0 with lowly Levante on Saturday in La Liga, although they arrive here in strong form in the Copa del Rey at least. They have progressed from seven of their last eight ties in this competition since the start of last season, while they have not lost any of their last seven away games (W4, D3) since a 1-0 league defeat to Athletic Club in early December.
Betis’ last eight Copa del Rey home matches saw both teams score. Betis failed to score in just one of their last 29 Copa del Rey games. Atlético scored at least twice in ten of their last 14 designated Copa del Rey away games.
Betis’ Chimy Ávila has four goal contributions across his last six appearances (G3, A1), including a second-half brace in the last round of the Copa del Rey against Elche (2-1). Álex Baena has scored more goals against Betis than against any other side in his career (G3), two of which came away from home including one this season.
Betis are set to be without a number of first-teamers, including Giovani Lo Celso, while Alexander Sørloth went off injured during Atlético’s game at Levante.
