Manchester City must simply avoid defeat by a 2+ goal margin in this semi-final second leg against an inconsistent Newcastle side in order to reach a first Carabao Cup final in five years. Newcastle have progressed from their last two Cup ties against Manchester City in this competition. The Magpies beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League in November, but haven’t beaten them twice in one season since 1983/84. Since last winning here in 2014/15, Newcastle have lost 11 straight away H2Hs. Manchester City have won all four of their games in the Carabao Cup this season by a two-goal margin (W4).

Having to settle for a draw after leading 2-0 against Tottenham on Sunday struck a blow to Manchester City’s title charge, although now just 90 minutes stand between them and a first Carabao Cup final since winning it for a fourth successive year in 2021. A 2-0 win in the first leg means that City are heavy favourites to eliminate the current holders for the third time across their last three ties against such teams. Adding further confidence for Pep Guardiola’s men is the fact they’ve progressed from each of their last six semi-final appearances in this competition, going on to lift the trophy on each occasion.

After ending a 70-year wait for major silverware in this competition, Newcastle’s chances of successfully defending their trophy look slim. Defeat in the first leg forms part of a wider poor run that’s seen them win just once inside 90 minutes across the last seven competitive games (D3, L3). Playing away from home may well exacerbate those issues, as after losing 4-1 having scored first at Liverpool on Saturday, Newcastle have won just two domestic away games since the start of October (D1, L6), while Eddie Howe’s men have managed just one clean sheet across their last 12 competitive trips.

Manchester City have been beaten in just one of their last 17 home games (W14, D2). Newcastle failed to win inside 90 minutes in two of the last three games they scored first in (D1, L1). Just two of Newcastle’s last six away matches featured over 2.5 goals.

Antoine Semenyo has five goal contributions in as many appearances for Manchester City since signing for the club (G4, A1), he also has four goal contributions against Newcastle and has never lost against them (W3, D4). Anthony Gordon scored the opener for Newcastle in their weekend defeat at Liverpool and has netted against City in each of the last two seasons, despite winning neither game (D1, L1).

Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki limped off with an injury against Tottenham, while Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães has missed their last three games.
