Mohamed Salah’s farewell tour at Liverpool will begin with an FA Cup quarter-final tie against one of his favourite opponents, recent Carabao Cup winners Manchester City. Manchester City have already completed the league double over Liverpool this season, but haven’t won three successive games against the Reds since a run of four in 1947. Four of Manchester City’s last five matches were level at half-time.

Manchester City’s season seemed to be crumbling after being dumped out of the UEFA Champions League by Real Madrid while they trailed Arsenal by nine points in the Premier League, but Pep Guardiola’s men flipped the script to beat the Gunners 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup before the international break. The Cityzens will now be looking to get back to Wembley for what would be an eighth successive FA Cup semi-finals appearance, and are favourites to do just that having avoided defeat in their last 18 domestic home games (W15, D3), and winning their last 17 FA Cup ties at the Etihad.

Liverpool’s season – and potentially Arne Slot’s job – could well rest on the cup competitions, as a 2-1 defeat to Brighton prior to the international break dented their Premier League top four hopes yet further. The Reds travel to PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals after this and will hope to generate momentum, yet their last three FA Cup campaigns all ending thanks to away defeats hints that they’re up against it here. The Reds have scored 3+ goals in seven of their eight FA Cup ties, including in their 3-1 win at Wolves in the previous round, but that serves as their only away win since the beginning of March (L3).

Five of Manchester City’s last six home games produced over 2.5 goals. Five of Liverpool’s last seven matches saw both teams score. Just two of Liverpool’s last 13 away matches were decided by a 2+ goal margin.

Nico O’Reilly was Manchester City’s Carabao Cup final hero with a brace, and he’ll hope for more success in front of goal since nine of his 11 goals prior came at home. In the spotlight for the visitors will no doubt be Salah, who has 21 goal contributions against Manchester City (G13, A8) with three of his last four goals against them coming at the Etihad.

Rúben Dias missed Manchester City’s win over Arsenal, while Liverpool’s Alisson remains doubtful and Jeremie Frimpong picked up an injury on international duty.
