This Copa del Rey quarter-final and Basque derby could be very competitive given that both Alavés and Real Sociedad come into it on the back of good recent results. Alavés have won each of the last three H2Hs by a one-goal margin, which is their longest ever winning run against Sociedad. Alavés won the only previous Copa del Rey H2H 2-1 and have only lost one of the last six meetings they hosted (W3, D2). Sociedad conceded exactly once in each of their last five away games.
Alavés enter this clash in good form having won three of their last four competitive fixtures (L1), a run that started when they beat Rayo Vallecano 2-0 in the previous round. Each of those victories, including Friday’s league 2-1 triumph at Espanyol, saw El Glorioso net exactly twice and they’ve also been impressive defensively having won all four of their cup games this term without conceding. Losing just two of their last 13 Copa del Rey games played at home (W8, D3) should also give Eduardo Coudet’s side plenty of confidence as they try to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2003/04.
This is much more familiar territory for Sociedad as it’s their fifth consecutive appearance in the last eight of a competition they won for the third time in 2019/20, although they needed penalties to get past Osasuna in the last round. They’d already beaten Negreira, Reus and Eldense a little more comfortably and La Real are now unbeaten in eight competitive games after Sunday’s 1-1 draw in another Basque derby against Athletic Club (W5, D3). An impressive record of not losing an away Copa del Rey game since losing to Barcelona at this stage in January 2023 (W11, D2) also suggests they will be undaunted by the short trip to Mendizorrotza.
Alavés picked up exactly one booking in each of their last three competitive games. Alavés’ last three home games all produced exactly two second-half goals. Each of Sociedad’s last nine fixtures saw both teams score.
Toni Martínez has scored second-half goals in three of Alavés’ four cup games this term, while four of his last six strikes in any competition came after the 75th minute. Beñat Turrientes has netted after the break in two of Sociedad’s Copa del Rey outings this season and has two goal contributions across his last four appearances in all competitions (G1, A1).
Alavés’ Carlos Protesoni went off with an injury against Espanyol on Friday while Sociedad do not appear to have any fresh injury concerns.
