Just three points separate top-four aspirants Roma and Serie A’s biggest surprise package Como, who are amongst those in European contention in just their second season back in the top flight. These sides have met only four times in the 21st century and the home side on the day won each time. Eleven of Roma’s 14 league games won or lost this season were settled by a single-goal margin.

After winning four consecutive league games, Roma have disappointingly slipped to back-to-back 1-0 reversals at the hands of Napoli and Cagliari to leave them clinging on to fourth ahead of the round. They bounced back with a routine 3-0 victory over Celtic in midweek UEFA Europa League action, and with over twice as many points as they’d achieved at this stage of last season, and more than each of the last four campaigns, there is still plenty to be positive about for Roma. They appear well placed to follow up Thursday’s victory here, having won four of their five Serie A games this term immediately following Thursday night European action (L1).

Also sitting on over twice as many points as this time last year, Como will make the trip south to Rome just three points behind their hosts. The Serie A surprise package will have been rocked by the abrupt ending of their 11-game unbeaten league run in the previous round with a comprehensive 4-0 defeat at Inter (W5, D6). Another test against a title hopeful awaits Cesc Fàbregas’ men, and these are the kind of games they’ve struggled most in this term, failing to score a single goal when facing sides sitting above them pre-round (D1, L2), with all three of those games also coming away from home.

Roma have won every league game when scoring first this season (W8). Como have scored six of their eight away league goals this term after half-time. Como have avoided defeat in half of their league games when conceding first (W1, D1, L2).

Matías Soulé leads the way for Roma with four Serie A goals – three of those were team openers and all came in victories. He lines up against fellow Argentinian Nico Paz, who has contributed to over half of Como’s 19 league goals (G5, A5) and eerily scored on December 15th against Roma last year.

Roma could have Wesley back from injury here, while Álvaro Morata is expected to miss out for Como.
