A depleted Manchester United side will be hoping to keep the pressure on the top four when they welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers side who are on course for the Premier League’s worst-ever season. Manchester United won the reverse fixture 4-1 at the start of this month, one of eight wins they’ve managed in the last Premier League H2Hs. Wolverhampton Wanderers ran out 1-0 victors in this corresponding H2H last season, but haven’t won consecutive away league H2Hs since September 1961. Manchester United have conceded nine of their 12 home league goals this term after half-time.

Despite his contrary declarations earlier in his tenure, Ruben Amorim appears to have abandoned his three-at-the-back system at Manchester United, with his tactically altered side battling to a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Boxing Day. That was their first victory without Bruno Fernandes in the Premier League since March 2022, and it took them to within five points of the top four as their good run stretched to just two defeats in 12 outings (W6, D4). The division’s kindest fixture on paper favours them hugely here too, as Manchester United have lost just once at Old Trafford since the opening weekend of the season (W5, D2).

Festive cheer is in short supply at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who face another daunting away trip on the back of a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday. That made the Old Gold the first side in English top-flight history to register as few as two points after their first 18 matches of a league campaign, while it also marked their 11th successive Premier League loss. Six consecutive defeats on the road have at least come without embarrassment for Rob Edwards’ men, as the last three came by single-goal margins against divisional heavyweights in Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Only two teams have led more Premier League games at half-time this season than Manchester United (nine). Wolverhampton Wanderers are the only side in England’s top-four leagues yet to score a first-half away goal this season. All five of Wolves’ Premier League goals at Old Trafford arrived in the second half.

Manchester United may look to Benjamin Šeško for a fast start considering four of his last five goals at club level arrived before half-time, including both for his new club. Teenage Wolverhampton Wanderers star Mateus Mané was handed a maiden Premier League start at Anfield, raining in four shots, and after assisting their equaliser at the Emirates, he’s unlikely to be overawed by the Old Trafford stage.

Manchester United don’t expect to welcome any of their absentees back here, with Mason Mount potentially joining their injury list. Wolves’ André misses out through suspension.
