It may have only been two games (W1, D1), but the Ruben Amorim era at Manchester United is already shaping up to be an entertaining one. The Red Devils have netted inside 90 seconds of both their first two matches under the Portuguese boss, who registered his first win on a “really special” night on Thursday in a thriller against Bodø/Glimt (3-2) to keep his side in contention to progress automatically in the UEFA Europa League.

Amorim is now tasked with lifting Manchester United out of the bottom half of the Premier League table. He’s presented with a decent opportunity to do that, on paper at least, against Everton – a side the Red Devils have won an all-time Premier League record 41 H2Hs against, including each of the last four, their longest such streak in this fixture since a run of nine between 1999 and 2004.

Faith amongst the travelling supporters that Everton can break that is bound to be low considering that the Toffees are winless in their last four matches (D3, L1), failing to score in the last three (D2, L1). Sean Dyche’s men played the majority of the game against ten men when being held by Brentford for a second consecutive goalless draw – they’ve not had three successive 0-0 results in the league since February 1982.

That’s hardly the ideal backdrop for a trip to Old Trafford, a venue where they’ve won just once in the last 31 Premier League visits (D8, L22). That came over a decade ago back in December 2013, and this Everton side have shown very little evidence that they can change that as they’ve won just once on the road in the league since December 2023 (D6, L10).

Players to watch: Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund staked his claim for a regular place in Amorim’s team with a sensational performance, directly contributing to all three of his side’s goals (G2, A1). If Everton are to end their goal drought, Dwight McNeil could well be the architect as he’s created almost double the amount of chances than any of his teammates in the Premier League this season (30).

Hot stat: Amorim won all of his last 22 home league matches in charge of Sporting by an aggregate score of 72-13.
