There’s potential history to be made for both Chelsea and Leeds in this midweek clash, with both sides arriving in buoyant fashion after wins in the last round. Chelsea have won each of the last six Premier League H2Hs they hosted. Leeds haven’t won at Stamford Bridge since 1999, but after their reverse-fixture win could now become just the second promoted team in history to complete a Premier League double over Chelsea. Chelsea have failed to score in a league-low two games this season.
Chelsea beat Wolves 3-1 on Saturday to boost their top-four hopes, with the Blues now having won four league games in a row. Their uptick in form has coincided with the arrival of new boss Liam Rosenior, who has overseen all four of those victories, and he could now become the first Chelsea manager since Maurizio Sarri in September 2018 to win his first three home league games in charge. Winning none of their three midweek Premier League games so far this season (D1, L2), including a 3-1 defeat away to Leeds, hardly makes for good reading on that front, nor do two defeats from three league matches so far this term against promoted opposition (W1).
Leeds’ survival push continues to go from strength-to-strength after a 3-1 victory against relegation rivals Nottingham Forest on Friday night stretched their positive run to just two defeats in 12 league games (W4, D6). The alarming observation from that run is that 14 of the 18 points earned came at Elland Road, contributing to a record of no wins in nine Premier League matches on the road (D4, L5). Only Burnley and Wolves have claimed fewer away points than Leeds’ seven (W1, D4, L7) and given Daniel Farke’s men haven’t won any of their last seven midweek top-flight away games (D3, L4), there appears little hope of stretching their six-point cushion to the bottom three here.
Only Arsenal and Manchester City have kept more first-half clean sheets than Chelsea (16) in the league this season. Leeds have conceded an average of 3.4 goals per game across their last seven midweek Premier League away games. Four of Leeds’ last five away league games featured under 2.5 goals.
After his hat-trick at the weekend, Cole Palmer has now scored six of his last seven Chelsea goals before half-time. Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored in the reverse fixture and could now become the first Leeds player to score home and away against Chelsea in the same campaign since Mark Viduka in 2000/01 – all four of his personal career H2H goals came after half-time.
Chelsea saw Andrey Santos withdrawn through injury late against Wolves while Anton Stach seems to be Leeds’ sole injury concern.
