Things are beginning to get desperate for both Tottenham and Newcastle, whose managers are under pressure amid underwhelming Premier League campaigns. After winning five of the seven previous Premier League H2Hs (D1, L1), Newcastle have not defeated any one side more times overall (27) or away from home (12) than Tottenham. This is the most played Premier League matchup to never finish 0-0 (61 games). Newcastle have trailed by one goal at half-time in four of their last five league games.

Tottenham have managed to sink to new lows domestically under embattled manager Thomas Frank, with their weekend loss away to Manchester United (2-0) making it seven league games without a win (D4, L3) and one point behind where they were at the same stage of their similarly disastrous Premier League campaign last season. The fate of Frank’s predecessor Ange Postecoglou is a reminder that Tottenham’s European success does not absolve him of his Premier League woes, particularly as the pressure builds from a home fanbase frustrated to not have not seen a domestic home win since early December (D2, L3).

Newcastle were in the midst of a four-game undefeated run in this competition when last meeting Tottenham (D 2-2) and would be desperate to recapture that kind of form after enduring their longest losing streak of this Premier League season (L3). Head coach Eddie Howe isn’t facing the kind of scrutiny applied to Frank on a weekly basis but admitted after their 3-2 loss at home to Brentford that he “isn’t doing (his) job well enough”, particularly on the road where the Magpies have lost half of their Premier League matches (W2, D4, L6). That’s despite his side opening the scoring in five of their last eight league away trips (W2, D1, L5), including in three heavy defeats to West Ham (3-1), Brentford (3-1) and most recently Liverpool (4-1).

Five of Tottenham’s last six Premier League matches saw both teams score. Tottenham have scored in each of their last seven Premier League home matches. Thirteen of Newcastle’s last 18 Premier League matches saw both teams score.

Dominic Solanke should be inspired by the sight of this opposition, scoring four goals in his last three games against Newcastle – three of them after half-time. Bruno Guimarães could make a late impact here after scoring his eighth second-half goal of the Premier League season at the weekend, one of which came in the reverse H2H.

Tottenham had no fewer than nine absences at the weekend and are now also without suspended captain Cristian Romero. Newcastle’s injuries included Lewis Miley, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon.
