Real Sociedad’s worst start to a La Liga season under Imanol Alguacil appears to be causing tensions within the leadership group, after captain Mikel Oyarzábal rejected Alguacil’s assertion that an attitude problem was responsible for their 1-0 loss away to Athletic Club last round, instead suggesting the tactical approach could have been the cause. Their approach was perfect in midweek though, as they downed Ajax 2-0 in UEFA Europa League action.

They defeated three quality opponents in three of their four La Liga games which preceded that Athletic defeat (L1) so will be hoping that result was an aberration in an eight-game stretch that hasn’t seen the San Sebastian club lose back-to-back league games (W4, D2, L2). Three losses from three home La Liga games as favourites this season suggests they’ve struggled to shoulder the weight of expectations, so they’ll have to be careful that conquering Barcelona (1-0) in their most recent home outing doesn’t lead to complacency.

Real Betis have had a remarkably similar season to Sociedad so far, not just in terms of points collected but in the manner of which they have both defeated some of the league’s best performing clubs but lost to its worst. Wins against top-six clubs Osasuna (2-1 away) and Atlético Madrid (1-0 home) looked to have taken their 2024/25 campaign to a new level, but it immediately crumpled thereafter.

Los Verdiblancos have to overcome a horrendous record of one win from their last 15 La Liga games away to Real Sociedad (D8, L6) as well as an active winless run of five trips to the Basque Country (D4, L1). They haven’t covered themselves in glory wherever they travel, failing to win all four away trips to clubs starting the round below them in the standings with Sociedad (D2, L2), including the lowly trio of Alavés (D 0-0), Las Palmas (D 1-1) and Valencia (L 4-2).

Players to watch: Sheraldo Becker’s three goals since the start of April all came inside the first half of a La Liga home game, including the winner v Barcelona, whilst Betis winger Juanmi has scored in four of his seven competitive appearances (of at least ten minutes) against Real Sociedad.
