Napoli have enjoyed great success against Roma of late, and they may need to keep that streak going if they’re to keep alive any realistic hopes of retaining their Serie A crown as they continue to falter in their title defence. Napoli have lost just one of the last 12 H2Hs (W7, D4) and are unbeaten in the last seven meetings they hosted (W4, D3). Only Inter Milan have led more Serie A matches at half-time this season than Napoli (12).
Napoli’s Coppa Italia defeat to Como in midweek was a third loss in five matches (W2), but you’d fancy them to bounce back here given they’re unbeaten in 22 home league games (W16, D6) – their longest streak in the Italian top flight since 1988. Just one defeat in Serie A since Christmas (W5, D3) should reinforce belief they can get back to winning ways here, but even after a 3-2 win against Genoa last weekend, a yawning nine-point pre-round gap to the Serie A summit leaves their title defence in tatters. Closing that deficit seems improbable, but a game against Roma could help keep the pressure up considering that manager Antonio Conte is unbeaten in his last nine personal Serie A H2HS (W5, D4).
Roma put a three-match winless run (D2, L1) to bed by beating Cagliari 2-0 last time out, a victory that keeps them in the hunt for the top four. The capital club haven’t finished inside the top four since 2017/18, which was also the last time they bettered their current haul of 46 points from 24 games. That campaign eight years ago saw them win their 25th game of the season, but replicating that feat this time around could be tricky given Gian Piero Gasperini’s men haven’t won a single game against a side starting this round alongside them in the top five (D1, L4), the worst such record of any Italian top-flight side.
Napoli have won all 13 Serie A games in which they’ve scored first this season. Roma’s league games are averaging a league-low of 1.79 goals per match. Roma are the only Serie A side who haven’t scored an away league goal after the 75th minute this term.
Napoli forward Rasmus Højlund has helped his team to victory in 21 of the last 26 club matches in which he has scored (D3, L2). Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar will be trying to keep him at bay and he has the highest save percentage in Serie A (83.5%) this season, averaging nearly three stops per game.
Napoli’s Juan Jesus is suspended, while Scott McTominay is a doubt. Roma’s injury list is a lengthy one and focused in attack with Evan Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk both out.
