After their humiliation in Thursday’s Copa del Rey semi-final first leg, Barcelona make the short trip to mid-table Girona hoping for a turnaround in this Catalan derby. Girona have lost their last three La Liga H2Hs, their longest such losing run. Barcelona have won four of their five away league games against their upcoming opponents (L1), scoring 12 goals in those five matches. Only Real Madrid (11) have been awarded more penalties in La Liga this season than Girona’s seven pre-round.

Girona drew 1-1 with Sevilla last Sunday, with that result meaning that the Blanquivermells are winless in three games (D2, L1) and stuck in 12th place ahead of this round of fixtures, albeit closer points-wise to the relegation zone than to the European qualification places. Concerns remain over their defensive solidity, as only two teams have conceded more goals in La Liga than their 37 this season going into this weekend. Head coach Míchel has turned his side into a stubborn unit at home though, as only Atlético Madrid have defeated them in their last eight such matches (W3, D4).

Barcelona conceded four goals before half-time in a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Atlético last time out. It was Barça boss Hansi Flick’s biggest loss since his lower-league coaching days 21 years ago and the German will naturally be demanding an immediate response. Thankfully for him, their form in La Liga has been superb, with 12 wins registered in their last 13 such matches (L1), but with Real Madrid breathing down their neck, their pre-round lead at the top of just one point is looking as precarious as ever. The four top-flight games in which they have failed to claim victory this term have also all been in their last ten such away trips (W6, D1, L3), making this a tricky fixture.

Girona scored exactly once in four of their last five home games. Barcelona have scored in 43 consecutive league matches. Nine of Barcelona’s last 11 away league games saw both teams score.

Girona stalwart Cristhian Stuani saw his penalty saved against Sevilla and has two goals and four yellow cards to his name in his last five meetings with Barcelona. Robert Lewandowski has scored four times in his last four appearances against Girona, and another strike here could be good news for the visitors, as Barcelona have won the last 16 matches in which he has found the net.

Girona’s Fran Beltrán went off injured against Sevilla, while Marcus Rashford missed Barcelona’s loss at Atlético because of a knee problem.
