With Serie A leaders Inter Milan faltering before the international break, this clash between Napoli and AC Milan may have elevated from a best-of-the-rest duel to a crucial match in the Scudetto race. After winning the reverse fixture 2-1 in September, Milan are chasing a first winning league double over Napoli since 2010/11, but have since been beaten by the Partenopei in the Supercoppa Italiana (2-0). Eight of Napoli’s ten home league wins this term came by a single-goal margin.

A run of four successive Serie A victories their joint best this season has given Napoli the faintest of hopes of retaining their title, starting the round seven points off the leading pace. The Partenopei have their tremendous form at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to thank for being in the picture at all, as they’re the only side in the division yet to lose at home this term (W10, D4). Boss Antonio Conte has faced no side more often than their visitors here (20) and only beaten Cagliari more (W13, D4, L3), so he’ll be confident of further success given that Napoli are unbeaten in 11 Serie A games played on a Monday (W7, D4) stretching back to January 2020.

The international break came at a good time for Milan, as two of their three league defeats this term came across their last five matches (W3). The Rossoneri, a point better off than their hosts, have accrued 32 points on their league travels this term (W9, D5, L1), with only arch rival table toppers Inter (34) managing more. Massimiliano Allegri will hope that inspires his side to improve on his dismal personal record against opposite number Conte (W2, D2, L6), which could come via a comeback as Milan have won a pre-round league-high 14 points from losing positions this season.

Eight of Napoli’s last nine Serie A fixtures produced over 2.5 goals. Milan have won seven of their last eight Monday held Serie A away matches (L1). Milan are the only team in the division yet to concede an away goal beyond the 75th minute this season.

Scott McTominay’s next Serie A goal involvement will be his 50th in Europe’s top five leagues, with his most recent strike the winner against Cagliari before the international break his third in a row to arrive before half time. He’ll be aiming to beat Mike Maignan on the Frenchman’s 150th Serie A appearance, two of which saw him keep a clean sheet on this ground.

Napoli duo Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Amir Rrahmani look set to remain sidelined, and Milan are without the injured Rafael Leão and suspended Fikayo Tomori.
