The race for a top-three finish in Ligue 1 is hotting up, and two direct rivals for the three automatic UEFA Champions League spots face off here as Monaco host Marseille. Marseille’s 1-0 win in the reverse fixture affords them the chance to complete a first H2H league double since 2007/08, but they’ve only won four of the last 14 away H2Hs (D1, L9). Monaco have won 11 of the 12 Ligue 1 games in which they’ve scored first this season (D1).

Only one team can boast to have won their last six Ligue 1 games, and that’s Monaco, with their formidable recent run thrusting them into top-three contention. But for a horrific run of seven defeats in eight league games between November and January, Monaco would probably be in the title conversation, but instead they start the round three points shy of third. Stretching their winning top-flight run to seven games for only the fourth time in history would further strengthen their credentials, and having won their last four Ligue 1 home games by a 2+ goal margin, they’ll certainly be confident of doing so here.

Marseille went into the international break on a downer after slumping to a 2-1 home defeat against Lille as they missed the chance to strengthen their grip on a top-three spot. Conceding goals has largely been the reason they have been unable to shake off the chasing pack, as only twice in the last 40 years have they conceded more than the 37 goals they’ve let in after 27 top-flight matches this season. The Phocaeans did at least keep a clean sheet on their last away outing (1-0 v Toulouse), but conceding 2+ goals in each of their five away games prior emphasises the size of the task at hand here for a side who’ve lost all five road trips this term against sides currently in the top seven.

Only one of Monaco’s last six league matches saw a goalless first half. Ten of Marseille’s last 11 Ligue 1 games featured at least one first-half goal. Marseille’s matches have averaged a pre-round league-high 3.3 goals per game this season.

Folarin Balogun has scored in five successive Ligue 1 matches – only three Monaco players have had a longer scoring run in the top flight in the 21st century, the last of whom was Wissam Ben Yedder (6) in 2019. Marseille’s Ethan Nwaneri followed up his goal against Lille with a brace for England U21s in the break, with three of his last four goals for club or country coming in the first half.

Monaco’s injury issues are focused in defence, where they could be without up to four players. Marseille will be missing their top scorer Mason Greenwood.
