Monaco extended their current European campaign during the week but are running out of chances to guarantee another one in 2026/27 as they host top-six hopefuls Rennes. Rennes ended a run of four consecutive H2H losses in the reverse fixture (W 4-1) but haven’t won away to Monaco in any competition since 2018/19 (D1, L6). Goals are usually guaranteed, as 16 of the last 18 H2Hs saw both teams score. Monaco scored exactly once in five of their last six Ligue 1 home games.
Monaco’s goalless draw with Juventus on Wednesday was enough to see them sneak into the UEFA Champions League knockout play-off round, meaning they’ll continue juggling three competitions in February. That heavy workload has contributed to a dramatic slide down the Ligue 1 table from second at the end of October down to tenth at the beginning of matchday 20, with this remaining their worst record after 20 top-flight games since narrowly avoiding relegation in 2018/19. The shock win over PSG in November turned out to be an anomaly rather than the start of a resurgence, with the other four of their last five Ligue 1 home games resulting in losses – three of them to higher-ranked opposition.
Rennes are well placed to end their two-season exile from European football, starting this round inside the top six. Picking up 19 Ligue 1 points since the start of November has greatly helped their cause (W6, D1, L2), but momentum was slowed a little by a 2-0 home defeat to Lorient in last weekend’s Breton derby, making it imperative that Rennes get back on track ahead of decisive games against Lens and PSG in February. Hitting the road should help them in that sense as Rennes have won four of their last five away games (L1), with that part of a wider run of one defeat in nine of their travels (W4, D4).
Ten of Monaco’s last 11 Ligue 1 games were won by the team that scored first. Rennes have conceded 75% of their away league goals this season after half-time (12/16). Rennes opened the scoring in seven of their last eight Ligue 1 away games.
Ansu Fati recorded Monaco’s only goal in their last Ligue 1 home game and he’s netted five of his six league goals this term at home. Rennes remain unbeaten in all competitions this season when Breel Embolo has found the net (W3, D3), including the reverse H2H.
Eric Dier and Wout Faes are expected to be out for Monaco. Rennes enjoyed another clean bill of health last weekend.
