Eintracht Frankfurt’s top-six chances are fading as they face a Bayer Leverkusen side in an enviable position in the Bundesliga. This fixture last produced a draw in December 2014, with Leverkusen winning 16 of the 23 H2Hs since then, including the last six. Their last two trips to Frankfurt resulted in 4-1 and 5-1 victories, following 5-1 and 5-2 defeats in the previous two such visits. Pre-round, no side have conceded more Bundesliga goals than Frankfurt’s 42 this season.

Frankfurt’s terrible form prompted a change of head coach in mid-January, but they’ve not enjoyed an immediate ‘new-manager bounce’, losing interim boss Dennis Schmitt’s first three matches in charge across all competitions, including a 2-0 UEFA Champions League defeat to Tottenham in midweek. They are in desperate need of a big result on Saturday to not only bridge the gap to the top-six but also to restore some belief in a side that hasn’t beaten a side starting this round in the top half since August (D2, L6). If Schmitt can help the Eagles rediscover the performance levels that saw them avoid defeat in five consecutive home league games before a 3-1 loss to Hoffenheim (W3, D2), their resurgence could begin here.

Leverkusen recovered from three successive losses by beating Werder Bremen 1-0, before securing a seeded place in the Champions League knockout phase play-offs after beating Villarreal 3-0 on Wednesday. Starting this round in sixth place, five points ahead of Frankfurt and Freiburg and with a game in hand on both sides, they can deal a massive blow to their nearest challengers if they can claim a fifth Bundesliga away win this season (D1, L3). Die Werkself have dropped points in only three of their 12 league matches this term against teams sat below them (W9, D2, L1), albeit without a clean sheet on the road in such contests (W3, D1, L1).

Fourteen of Frankfurt’s 19 league games this term saw both teams score. Eight of Leverkusen’s last 11 Bundesliga games were decided by a 2+ goal margin. Six of Leverkusen’s eight away league matches this season have produced more than 2.5 goals.

New Frankfurt loan signing Arnaud Kalimuendo has made it 1-0 in his last two games, while Malik Tillman’s brace against Villarreal means that he has opened the scoring or extended Leverkusen’s lead with all five of his goals for the club.

Frankfurt do not seem to have any fresh absentees, while Leverkusen defender Loïc Badé is suspended.
