Bayer Leverkusen look to take another step towards a repeat of their 2023/24 DFB-Pokal triumph as they welcome Bundesliga basement boys St Pauli in this quarter-final clash. Leverkusen are unbeaten in three meetings with St Pauli since their return to the top-flight despite failing to keep a clean sheet (W2, D1). St Pauli have knocked Leverkusen out of this competition on both occasions they’ve met in this century by single-goal margins. Leverkusen have won by a 2+ goal margin in five of their six home games against sides sitting below them this season (W5, D1).

Leverkusen recorded a third straight win across all competitions with a 3-1 triumph over Frankfurt at the weekend as they continue to fight on three fronts. The two-time winners of this competition saw off Dortmund in the previous round and head into this as strong favourites, which is reinforced by their imperious record against sides sitting below them in the Bundesliga this season (W10, D2, L1). That’s further backed up by a five-game winning run in DFB-Pokal home games, while Leverkusen have scored 3+ goals in each of their last four quarter-finals at home.

St Pauli’s winless run reached six matches on Saturday (D3, L3) as they were beaten 2-1 by Augsburg, leaving them five points adrift of safety, so they may be happy about this midweek distraction from their ongoing relegation battle. Alexander Blessin’s men have already knocked out two fellow Bundesliga sides, including the Bundesliga’s third-placed side Hoffenheim, on the way to a seventh DFB-Pokal quarter-final and a third in the last five seasons. The previous two ended in defeat, as did eight of their last 11 competitive away matches (D2, L8).

Leverkusen have won seven of their last ten DFB-Pokal games without reply. Six of St Pauli’s last ten DFB-Pokal ties required extra-time, with three going all the way to penalties. Six of St Pauli’s last eight competitive away games saw both teams score and over 2.5 goals.

Alejandro Grimaldo leads the way for Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal (G2, A1), and heads into this game having been involved in a goal in successive matches (G1, A1). St Pauli’s Martijn Kaars also has two goals and an assist in this season’s DFB-Pokal, with both strikes opening the scoring for both his current side and former team Magdeburg earlier in the campaign.

Leverkusen’s Christian Kofane is a doubt here after being forced off early at the weekend, while St Pauli defender Hauke Wahl could also miss this one.
