Marseille head into the latest installment of Le Classique looking to revive their faint Ligue 1 title hopes, but victories away at PSG have been exceedingly rare in recent times. PSG have won 16 of the last 18 H2Hs that they hosted (D1, L1), but were beaten 1-0 in September’s reverse fixture. De Zerbi therefore could become the first Marseille boss since PSG were taken over in 2011/12 to beat them more than once. PSG have trailed a league-low two games at half-time this season (HT: W10, D8).
PSG summit Ligue 1 by two points pre-round, which leaves them in a much closer title race than they’ve been accustomed to in recent years. That’s unlikely to faze Luis Enrique’s men, who have won six successive league matches, four of which by just a single-goal margin, including their 2-1 victory over Strasbourg last week in which they scored the winner after being reduced to ten men. The Parisians were held in their last game at the Parc des Princes by Newcastle in the UEFA Champions League (D 1-1), yet as they last failed to win successive home matches in May 2024 and have dropped just two Ligue 1 points here all season (W8, D1), they’re justifiably big favourites.
Marseille are boosted by a dominant 3-0 win over Rennes in midweek that booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France, a timely victory for Roberto De Zerbi’s men who squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Paris FC last week. That marked the fourth instance of the Olympians dropping points to a goal in second-half stoppage time already this season. Those self-inflicted wounds mean that Marseille are looking to become just the second team in Ligue 1 history – after themselves in 1988/89 when they won the title – to overcome a seven-point deficit at this stage to finish in the top-two.
PSG have kept a first-half clean sheet in their last five home league matches. Marseille have lost all four away games against the pre-round top six this term. Ten of the 22 goals Marseille have conceded in Ligue 1 this term came beyond the 80th minute.
Désiré Doué is hoping to mark his 100th Ligue 1 appearance by ending a seven-match goal drought across all competitions – PSG are unbeaten when he’s featured in the league this term (W9, D2). Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored in successive Marseille games, but his only goal in 12 matches against PSG came back in November 2012.
PSG’s Achraf Hakimi is suspended, while Marseille’s Igor Paixão is doubtful.
