PSG boss Luis Enrique stands on the brink of history if he can guide his PSG side to victory against tournament favourites Bayern Munchen in this UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-final first leg. Bayern Munchen won 2-1 on this ground in the league phase back in November, part of five UCL H2H wins in a row, the longest winning streak anyone has ever pieced together against PSG in major European competition.

Defending UCL champions PSG have been formidable in the competition again this season, breezing through the last three knockout rounds to reach a third successive UCL semi-final. The Parisians have now won eight of their last nine competitive matches, including Saturday’s 3-0 win against Angers which stretched their lead at the Ligue 1 summit to six points. With their domestic title now all but sewn up, they can put extra focus on the UCL and Enrique’s bid to become the fastest ever coach to win 50 games in the competition, a feat that should he secure here, would also serve as PSG’s 100th win in the UCL proper. Achieving that in this match would be highly apt considering their maiden victory in that run was a 1-0 home win against none other than Bayern Munchen.

Bayern Munchen have already won their league title, but they warmed up for this game in indifferent fashion, as after going 3-0 down away to Mainz at the weekend they battled back to win 4-3. They’re used to tasting that winning feeling in this season’s UCL as no side has won more than their 11 games in the competition this term, and they’ve proven they’re competent travellers too by winning seven of their last nine UCL away games (D1, L1). The Bavarians will have to keep that kind of momentum going if they’re to reach a first UCL final since 2020 when they beat PSG in the final, but after going unbeaten in 19 competitive matches (W17, D2), momentum isn’t much of an issue for a side bidding for a tenth victory in a row.

PSG have kept six clean sheets in their last eight competitive outings. PSG have scored 2+ goals in a joint-UCL record eight successive knockout matches. Eight of Bayern’s last nine UCL games saw both teams score. Eleven of Bayern’s 12 UCL matches this term produced over 2.5 goals.

PSG’s Bradley Barcola tends to start quickly in this competition, scoring his last four UCL goals inside the opening 20 minutes. Luis Díaz has scored in three successive UCL matches for Bayern Munchen and he has a knack for striking later, with seven of his last nine club goals arriving after the hour mark.

PSG hope to have Vitinha available after he missed their last two games through injury, while Bayern Munchen have similar hopes for Lennart Karl, but Serge Gnabry is out.
