Massimiliano Allegri’s second stint as AC Milan manager starts with a Serie A matchday one fixture against newly-promoted Cremonese at San Siro. Milan have historically dominated this fixture at Serie A level (W10, D4, L2), having never lost at San Siro (W7, D1), with that sole draw coming when the sides last met here in the 2022/23 season. Last season promised so much for Milan after they lifted the Supercoppa Italiana against the odds, but it ended in disaster.

The club’s lowest top-flight finish (eighth) since the 2014/15 campaign and a loss in the Coppa Italia final leaves them without European action this season and the Rossoneri went back to appointing the experienced Allegri to oversee their renaissance. Allegri’s last spell in charge of Milan saw him win the Scudetto in his first season, so they have a huge positive omen to cling onto in an attempt to offset the disappointment of losing the influential Tijjani Reijnders over the summer.

Cremonese earned their sixth promotion from Serie B to Serie A after a two-year absence, defeating Spezia in last season’s play-off final. The Grigiorossi appointed Davide Nicola hoping that the top-flight’s miracle man can weave his magic and keep them away from relegation trouble. Crashing out of the Coppa Italia last weekend after a loss via penalties to Palermo hasn’t been an auspicious start, but the expected arrival of experienced forward Antonio Sanabria is likely to boost their spirits and chances of success.

Milan conceded the match opener in five of their last six home league games. Milan won the most points from losing positions (22) last season in the top-flight (W6, D4, L11). Cremonese lost all of their eight previous Serie A season openers, each time on the road. Eight of Cremonese’s last nine away league games, including Serie B play-offs, saw both teams score.

Christian Pulisic completed Milan’s scoring against Bari and another strike here could be good news as Milan won on all 12 occasions he found the net in a home league fixture. Jari Vandeputte could provide an early answer for Cremonese as eight of his last 12 league contributions (G3, A9) have come in the first-half.

Rafael Leão is out with a calf injury for Milan. Tommaso Barbieri and Franco Vázquez are suspended for Cremonese.
