With both sides holding just a six-point cushion to the relegation zone, the meeting of 16th-place Leeds and 17th-place Nottingham Forest could have huge repercussions in the battle to beat the drop. Forest won the reverse fixture 3-1 earlier this season and have had the edge across the last eight H2Hs (W4, D3, L1). At Elland Road though, Forest haven’t won across their last five visits (D3, L2), with their last win coming exactly ten years ago to the day of this fixture.
A solid run through December and into the new year has afforded Leeds some breathing space in the relegation battle, but a 4-0 defeat against Arsenal last weekend was a harsh reminder that they’re far from safe just yet. A home game seems the perfect opportunity to put more daylight between themselves and the drop zone, especially as Leeds have lost just one game at Elland Road this term against a side currently outside of the top three (W5, D4). Optimism should only be boosted by a Friday night fixture too, as Leeds have won their last three on home turf on this day, including earlier this campaign against another struggler in West Ham.
Battling relegation would hardly have been the vision this season for a Forest side who finished seventh last season, but a tumultuous campaign means they have little room for error from hereon in. A four-match unbeaten league run (W2, D2) has greatly aided their cause, and that of boss Sean Dyche, who was coming under growing pressure to face the sack prior to an uptick in results. Progression to the knockout play-off round of the UEFA Europa League means Forest have two extra games to contend with this month, but an away game could provide the perfect opportunity to keep momentum going heading into those fixtures given four of Forest’s last five Premier League wins arrived on the road.
Only Sunderland (12) have seen more Premier League games stand level at half-time than Leeds (11) this season. Eight of Leeds’ last ten home games featured over 2.5 goals. Eight of Forest’s last ten matches saw at least one first-half goal. Forest have scored eight of their 11 away league goals this season after half-time.
Leeds could look to Brenden Aaronson for a fast start as he’s opened the scoring on his last six scoring appearances for the club. Forest’s Omari Hutchinson has a preferred window to strike in, with seven of his last eight goals at club level arriving between the 30th and 60th minutes.
Lukas Nmecha missed Leeds’ defeat to Arsenal. Forest will be without the suspended Neco Williams, while Matz Sels was withdrawn at half-time last weekend with an injury.
