Neither Porto nor Nottingham Forest have contested a European semi-final in over a decade, but that’s the prize on offer here as they square off in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League (UEL). Nottingham Forest prevailed 2-0 over Porto in the league phase in October’s maiden H2H, but have since been beaten by Portuguese opponents in Braga (1-0). Porto have won just two of their last 14 meetings with English teams (D4, L8).
Porto embark on their 18th European quarter-final hoping for a change of fortunes, having lost their last four such ties. The Dragons’ last European semi-final came en route to winning this competition back in 2010/11, and that was also the last campaign in which they managed to win six European home games in the same season, a feat they can match with another success here. Francesco Farioli’s men are unbeaten in six competitive matches at any venue (W4, D2), but come into this contest bruised after twice squandering the lead and conceding a 99th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 home draw with Famalicão at the weekend.
Nottingham Forest spent the international break in high spirits after a stirring 3-0 win over relegation rivals Tottenham in the Premier League, just three days after seeing off Midtjylland to book their place in a first European quarter-final in 30 years. The Tricky Trees boast a strong record in such ties (W3, L1), and considering that their wins in their last two games are more than they managed in ten prior (D4, L5), they appear to finally have some momentum behind them. Nottingham Forest’s Portuguese boss Vítor Pereira – their fourth manager of the campaign – surprisingly faces Porto for the first time in his managerial career here, and is looking to guide the visitors to three successive away victories for the first time since January 2025.
Among teams still in the competition, Porto have been given a joint-competition high 29 yellow cards. Porto have scored 2+ goals in six of their last eight home games. Nottingham Forest have scored a competition-high eight goals between the 16th and 30th minute this season. Only Bologna (79) have registered more shots on target than Nottingham Forest (77) in the UEL this term.
Borja Sainz assisted a goal in both of Porto’s wins over Stuttgart in the last 16, and could become their first player to assist in three successive European games since Fredy Guarín in 2011. Neco Williams forms part of a Nottingham Forest defence looking to stop him, but he’s a threat going forward too having assisted twice against Tottenham while converting from the spot in their shootout win over Midtjylland.
Porto have doubts over Zaidu Sanusi and Rodrigo Mora, while Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is suspended.
