Freiburg and Celta Vigo face off in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League (UEL), with the home side making their inaugural appearance at this stage of any European tournament. These sides have never met before, while Freiburg’s only games against Spanish opposition both ended in defeat to Sevilla in the 2013/14 UEL. Celta’s only victory from six matches against German clubs came back in February 2001 (D2, L3).

Freiburg booked their place in the last eight with a 5-1 demolition at home to Belgian side Genk in the previous round, and this competition has been their shining light this term amidst a poor Bundesliga campaign by their own recent standards. A top-six domestic finish looks beyond Julian Schuster’s men after they squandered a 2-0 lead beyond the 80th minute to lose 3-2 to Bayern on Saturday, with that a fourth defeat from their last seven competitive matches (W2, D1). Freiburg will hope for better here given that they’ve won their last nine UEL home games – the last German side to win more in succession in this competition were Dortmund between 1987 and 1993.

Celta Vigo were successful for the first time in four attempts in their last European quarter-final appearance back in 2016/17, and they enter this tie as underdogs having finished four points and nine positions behind Freiburg in the league phase. The Sky Blues have impressed since, seeing off PAOK and Lyon to reach this stage while winning the away leg of both ties, and they’re buoyed by coming from behind to beat Valencia 3-2 in La Liga on Sunday. Celta are now unbeaten in eight away matches across all competitions (W4, D4), winning four of their last five while scoring 2+ goals each time.

Four of Freiburg’s last five UEL games were won 1-0 by the home side on the day. Just one of Celta’s last eight games was decided by greater than a one-goal margin. Celta scored first in each of their last seven UEL games.

Freiburg’s all-time top scorer in major European competition (G9), Vincenzo Grifo scored and assisted against Genk in the previous round, while only two players boast more UEL goal involvements since the 2022/23 season than his 14 (G9, A5). Williot Swedberg scored in three consecutive UEL appearances earlier this season and returned to form with a goal in Celta’s weekend victory.

Freiburg’s Lucas Höler picked up a potential injury at the weekend and is doubtful. Celta lost Hugo Álvarez to injury at the weekend, while Javi Rueda is suspended.
