On a historic evening for Freiburg, their nose dive in form seems to have come at the worst possible time as they prepare to visit Braga in the first leg of this UEFA Europa League (UEL) semi-final. This is a maiden European H2H between these sides. Braga are winless and goalless in four major European competition knockout games against German opposition (D1, L3).
Braga are into just their second ever major European semi-final after overcoming Real Betis in the last eight, but their continental form sharply contrasts with their European results. A 2-1 defeat to Santa Clara in the Portuguese top flight on Sunday left them a whopping 26 points adrift of top spot, and while they’re still on course to be back in Europe next season, winning this competition would unlock the door to a first UEFA Champions League campaign since 2023/24. Winning the first leg in just two of their last 11 UEL knockout ties hardly bodes well, but they can at least lean on having won 12 of their last 16 European home matches (D2, L2) for inspiration here.
Freiburg’s DFB-Pokal defeat last week was followed up by a thumping 4-0 reversal against Borussia Dortmund at the weekend, which is hardly ideal preparation for their maiden European semi-final. The German side have been largely untroubled in getting this far, finishing in the top eight in the league phase before blowing Genk and Celta Vigo away in the last two rounds, leaving them on the brink of winning four successive UEL knockout games for the first time in history. They can hardly profess to be prolific victors on the road in this competition though, winning just two of their last nine UEL away games (D3, L4), failing to score in three of their last four such outings.
Braga have scored in 18 successive home matches. Only two of Braga’s last eight home matches in the UEL proper saw both teams score. Only two of Freiburg’s last eight UEL games saw both teams score. Freiburg conceded exactly once in five of their last six UEL away matches.
Ricardo Horta has 32 goal involvements in this competition for Braga (G18, A14), the most of any player for a single club since 2009/10. He also scored the match winner on his last four UEL scoring appearances. Yuito Suzuki has scored in two of Freiburg’s last three UEL outings, with eight of his nine goals for the club arriving before the hour mark.
Braga’s Gabriel Moscardo is suspended here, with Florian Grillitsch’s injury at the weekend adding to their woes. Freiburg’s Jordy Makengo missed the Dortmund defeat through injury.
