Shakhtar Donetsk and Crystal Palace will face off in the semi-final during their maiden UEFA Conference League appearances, with the Ukrainians trying to become their country’s first continental winners since they themselves won the 2008/09 UEFA Cup. This will be a first-ever meeting between the sides. Shakhtar Donetsk boast an impressive five wins from nine games (D2, L2) against English clubs across their various ‘home’ venues inside and outside of Ukraine. Crystal Palace’s win over Dynamo Kyiv earlier this season was their only game against Ukrainian opposition.

After yet another season of playing continental football abroad, Shakhtar Donetsk have shown inspirational resilience to reach the last four of a UEFA competition for the third time in 11 seasons. The previous two saw them fall to Sevilla (2015/16) and Inter Milan (2019/20) in the Europa League, and whilst they played some impressive football against AZ Alkmaar in the quarter-finals, particularly in Kraków (W 3-0), this tie promises to be another step up in difficulty. There doesn’t appear to be any advantage from ‘hosting’ this leg either, as Shakhtar Donetsk have won only two of six games in Kraków this season (D2, L2).

Reigning FA Cup holders Crystal Palace were demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League due to club ownership rules and have found the third tier to be a fairly comfortable place in their first continental campaign since the 1998 Intertoto Cup. Manager Oliver Glasner believes the team’s 2-0 victory over Ukrainian club Dynamo Kyiv during the league phase will serve them well in lieu of UEFA knockout experience, particularly as it was one of three continental wins the South London side have had away from home this season (D2, L2).

Only four of the 19 goals scored by Shakhtar Donetsk this Conference League season came before half-time. Seven of Shakhtar’s ten Conference League games this season produced over 2.5 goals. Crystal Palace have scored 14 goals and conceded only one before half-time this Conference League season. Five of Crystal Palace’s six wins this Conference League season were by a 2+ goal margin.

Shakhtar’s Alisson Santana has accumulated six goals in all continental football this season, with three of them opening the scoring. Ismaïla Sarr is the top remaining scorer of this competition, scoring seven Conference League goals, including at least one in each of Crystal Palace’s last three matches.

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Dmytro Kryskiv remains injured, whilst Crystal Palace will seemingly be missing Evann Guessand and Eddie Nketiah.
