The first leg of this UEFA Conference League semi-final represents uncharted territory for Rayo Vallecano and Strasbourg as neither side has previously reached this stage of a major European competition. These two sides have never met, but Rayo Vallecano won both previous games against French opponents, beating Bordeaux home and away in 2000/01. This is Strasbourg’s first game against Spanish opposition since drawing three times with Barcelona in the 1964/65 Fairs Cup, a tie they eventually won on a coin toss.
Rayo Vallecano beat AEK Athens 4-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals despite losing the second leg 3-1 to reach this stage, and showed more resilience to come from behind to draw 3-3 with Real Sociedad on Sunday by scoring a 99th-minute equaliser. Having come through qualifying, it’s been a long campaign for Los Franjirrojos, although losing just two of their last six competitive games (W3, D1) suggests they’ll stay the course. Their home form in Europe this term has been solid as they’ve won five of their six Conference League fixtures at Vallecas (L1), while they’ve only lost two competitive home games since the start of October (W10, D7).
Strasbourg overcame a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their quarter-final against Mainz, their only European loss of the season (W8, D3), to progress 4-2 on aggregate. Successive losses without scoring followed that victory, but Le Racing avoided a third defeat in a row by scoring twice in stoppage time to beat Lorient 3-2 on Sunday. Boss Gary O’Neil will hope that timely win sets them up for further success on the road, as prior to their defeat to Mainz, Strasbourg had travelled well in this competition, winning their first four Conference League proper road games this term by a one-goal margin.
Rayo Vallecano have conceded exactly three times in three of their last four matches. Rayo Vallecano kept a first half clean sheet in five of their six European home games this term. Strasbourg have conceded at least twice in four of their last five fixtures. Only one of Strasbourg’s last five away Conference League games saw a goal scored after the 65th minute.
Fran Pérez has scored twice in Europe for Rayo Vallecano this term, while each of his last six goals in any competition arrived between the 20th minute and half-time. Strasbourg’s Sebastian Nanasi has scored in two of his last four appearances, while both of his Conference League goals this term have been match openers inside 30 minutes.
Álvaro García and Luiz Felipe missed Rayo’s weekend match, while Strasbourg may still be without Valentín Barco.
