An upset could be on the cards in the DFB-Pokal as second tier Hertha Berlin look to knock out Bundesliga inhabitants Freiburg in the quarter-finals. These two clubs haven’t met since 2023, but Freiburg have lost only three of the last 20 H2Hs (W8, D9), while six of the last seven clashes contained over 2.5 goals. Hertha Berlin have netted at least twice in five of their last eight fixtures.
A decade has passed since Hertha Berlin last reached the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal, but they at least come into this clash on a high after their 3-0 league victory over Elversberg at the weekend ended a six-game winless run (D5, L1). Prior to the weekend, Hertha’s last win came in this competition as they beat Kaiserslautern 6-1 in the last 16, yet a much sterner test awaits here as this is their first draw of the season against Bundesliga opposition. No home win in over two months (D3, L1) hardly makes for great reading on that front, although the fact that forms the tail end of a run of just one defeat in ten at the Olympiastadion (W6, D3) hints that they’ll at least be competitive here.
Runners-up in the 2022 DFB-Pokal final, Freiburg are attempting to qualify for the last four for the third time in five seasons. A 1-0 success against Werder Bremen at the weekend served as the perfect preparation in that quest, but with Freiburg still playing catch-up in the Bundesliga’s European race, this competition might carry extra importance as it could be their best route back into continental football for 2026/27. Some torrid recent away form threatens to narrow down their European options though, as the Breisgau Brazilians have won just one of their last eight away games in all competitions (D2, L5).
Hertha Berlin are unbeaten when scoring first this season (W11, D3). Four of Freiburg’s last five games have ended 1-0. Only one of Freiburg’s last 17 games was won by the away side on the day.
It is usually a good sign for Hertha Berlin if Luca Schuler is on target, as he has lost just one of the last 36 games in which he has scored (W31, D4). Freiburg’s Lucas Höler has scored his last five goals after half-time, including two DFB-Pokal strikes this term which both served as the last goal of the game.
Hertha Berlin are likely to be without Maurice Krattenmacher. Freiburg’s Lukas Kübler is a doubt with a hamstring problem.
