Chelsea will look to reach the final four of this season’s FA Cup and avoid suffering an almighty upset when League One Port Vale arrive at Stamford Bridge. This will be the 15th meeting between Chelsea and Port Vale and first since 1929. The Blues have lost just three of the prior 14 H2Hs (W7, D4). Chelsea have conceded an average of 2.25 goals across their last eight competitive games (W2, D1, L5).
Starting the weekend sixth in the Premier League and having been dumped out of the UEFA Champions League by PSG a few weeks back, Chelsea’s last hope of winning some silverware this season comes in the FA Cup. Playing in what is their 37th quarter-final tie in this competition’s history, the hosts possess plenty of pedigree and will be looking to further extend their record of winning each of their last six FA Cup last-eight matches since defeat to Everton in 2016. If that’s not enough for the home faithful to get excited about, the Blues also hold a formidable cup record over recent years when facing sides from a lower division, progressing from all 37 ties played against lower-tier clubs in domestic cup competitions since 2015/16.
That won’t serve as music to the ears of visiting Port Vale, who arrive here with the Herculean task of trying to end that run despite sitting rock-bottom of England’s third tier. Winning just seven of their 38 League One outings (D10, L21), the away side’s only success this term has come in the FA Cup, reaching the quarter-final stage for the first time since 1953/54. On that occasion they beat Leyton Orient to reach the final four, and this time they’ll need to produce the perfect display to become the first side from the third tier or lower to eliminate two Premier League clubs in a single FA Cup campaign since 2017/18 after they dumped out Sunderland in the last round.
Chelsea have scored in each of their last 48 home FA Cup games against sides from a lower division. Port Vale have scored 2+ goals in just one of their last 13 competitive fixtures. Port Vale have won each of their last four FA Cup games by a 1-0 scoreline.
Chelsea’s João Pedro has scored seven goals in his last seven FA Cup appearances, though all came away from home. Ben Waine has scored three FA Cup goals this season, including Port Vale’s winner in both of their fourth and fifth rounds against higher-tier opposition.
Chelsea are missing defensive pair Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah, while Port Vale are without talisman Jayden Stockley.
