Aston Villa remain favourites to win the UEFA Europa League (UEL), but their credentials face a stern test in this quarter-final first leg against an in-form Bologna. Aston Villa won both previous meetings without conceding, one earlier this season and one in last term’s UEFA Champions League. They’ve also kept clean sheets in their last four major European games against Italian sides (W3, D1) while Bologna have lost to nil in their last three continental matches against English clubs.

Bologna returned from the international break with a 2-1 win over Cremonese, but with nine points separating them from the European spots in Serie A, winning this competition could be deemed their best route back into Europe for next season. An 11-match unbeaten run in the UEL (W7, D4) should at least fuel belief they can keep rolling in this competition, with that serving as the longest undefeated streak by an Italian side in Europe since Fiorentina managed 12 in 2023/24 en route to the UEFA Conference League final. Vincenzo Italiano was in charge of that Fiorentina side too, which he will hope is a good omen as they aim to match that record by extending their unbeaten run at home in this competition this season (W2, D4).

Reaching the quarter-finals of a European competition for the third season running, and sitting pretty in the Premier League’s top four, things are looking promising for Aston Villa. Three wins from their last four matches are symbolic of the momentum they’ve garnered, and with two of those victories coming in this competition and with an accompanying clean sheet, Aston Villa seem to be making this competition their own. Seven successive UEL wins reinforce that point, and collecting a fifth win from six European away fixtures this term (L1) would see them become the sixth English club in history to win eight European games in a row.

Bologna have attempted more shots (224) than any side remaining in the UEL. Six of Bologna’s last seven home games produced under 2.5 goals. Aston Villa haven’t conceded before half-time in any of their last four matches. Aston Villa have scored their last six UEL goals after half-time.

Jonathan Rowe has five goal contributions across his last six UEL appearances (G3, A2) but may have to be patient here given his last nine home goals at club level arrived after the 30th minute. Ollie Watkins was on target in Aston Villa’s last UEL away game and has netted six of his last seven club goals after the hour mark.

Thijs Dallinga and Jens Odgaard missed Bologna’s weekend game. Aston Villa’s Jadon Sancho picked up a shoulder injury during the international break, joining Boubacar Kamara in the treatment room.
