For the fourth successive year, the final of the Supercopa de España will be contested between Barcelona and Real Madrid, with silverware on the line in the season’s second El Clásico. Barcelona may have won all four H2Hs last season, including 5-2 in the Supercopa final, but they were beaten in this term’s only meeting in October (2-1). Real Madrid have won ten of the prior 18 Supercopa H2Hs (D2, L6), with the finals in the last three campaigns between these two producing a whopping 16 total goals.

Barcelona come into the final with plenty of momentum on their side, as they thrashed Athletic Club 5-0 in the semi-finals, rattling in four of those goals before half-time. Boss Hansi Flick was understandably thrilled as his side romped to a ninth successive win across all competitions, with the La Liga leaders scoring 2+ goals in each victory. Barcelona have also now kept five consecutive clean sheets, so despite the high calibre of their opponents here, the Blaugrana appear to hold all the cards as they go in search of what would be a record-extending 16th Supercopa title.

Real Madrid booked their place in this final with a dogged 2-1 victory over city rivals Atlético on Thursday night which, once again, was marred by controversy as Diego Simeone clashed with Vinícius Júnior on the touchline. Los Blancos boss Xabi Alonso believes Simeone “crossed the line”, but it was his side who got over the line with a fifth successive competitive win which gives Alonso the chance to lift his first trophy in charge of the club. As he’s less than a month removed from reportedly being lined up to be sacked, Alonso can ill-afford to oversee a loss here, while victory would move Real Madrid (13) to within one of Barcelona on the all-time list of Supercopa victories.

Nine of Barcelona’s 12 Supercopa goals under Flick came before half-time. Barcelona haven’t retained the Supercopa since 2011. Five of Real Madrid’s last six games saw both teams score. Real Madrid have received exactly one yellow card in four of their last five games.

A goal and two assists against Athletic means that Fermín López has had a hand in five goals in his last two Barcelona outings (G1, A4), while he was also on target in October’s Clásico defeat. Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde has managed four goal involvements in his last two matches (G1, A3), but he has more career yellow cards (5) than goals (3) against Barcelona.

Barcelona look to have no new concerns, while Real Madrid hope to welcome Kylian Mbappé back here.
