Carabao Cup holders Newcastle United face a stern test of their competition credentials when they host a Manchester City side closing in on the all-time record for EFL Cup victories. Newcastle United won this corresponding fixture 2-1 in the Premier League earlier this season, but that’s one of just two wins they’ve managed in the last 16 H2Hs (D3, L11). Manchester City have only failed to score inside 90 minutes in two of their last 21 away H2Hs.

Newcastle’s preparations for this clash were far from ideal as they were taken all the way to penalties on Saturday before overcoming Bournemouth in the FA Cup. That served as a fourth win in succession for the Magpies, whose sensational home form has been the bedrock of their success this term as they’ve now won 11 of their last 13 games at St. James’ Park (D2). A win against Manchester City in the Premier League is bedded within that run, and with Newcastle United having already knocked out top-flight opposition in Tottenham and Fulham here in the EFL Cup this season, they ought to be confident of taking an advantage to Manchester for February’s second leg.

Manchester City won this competition four times in a row from 2018-2021, but they haven’t reached the final since then as they bid to close in on Liverpool’s competition record of ten triumphs. The eight-time winners have made light work of the Carabao Cup this season, winning all three of their games to date by a two-goal margin, with their 2-0 win against Brentford in the last round setting up this tie. They again showcased their penchant for cup football at the weekend by thumping League One Exeter City 10-1 at the Etihad – their joint-biggest win in club history – and while scoring ten goals again is highly improbable, a repeat result certainly isn’t for a Manchester City side who have won four of their last five competitive away games (D1).

Newcastle United have scored exactly twice inside 90 minutes in ten of their last 11 home games. Seven of Newcastle’s last eight home games saw both teams score. Five of Manchester City’s last seven away matches saw both teams score.

Harvey Barnes’ weekend brace against Bournemouth served as his fourth home double of the season for Newcastle United – including against Manchester City – with seven of those eight goals arriving after half-time. New Manchester City signing Antoine Semenyo scored on his debut against Exeter and has now scored 11 of his last 13 goals at club level beyond the break.

Jacob Murphy missed Newcastle’s game against Bournemouth, during which Valentino Livramento picked up yet another injury. Rúben Dias and Savinho have missed Manchester City’s last two games.
