This will be a titanic La Liga clash between second and third as in-form Real Madrid visit a stuttering Villarreal on Saturday evening. Real Madrid are targeting a third win from their last four away trips to Villarreal (D1) across all competitions, after failing to win each of the six prior to that (D5, L1). Real Madrid have won every league game this season when they have opened the scoring.
A 2-1 home defeat in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) on Tuesday means that Villarreal have lost five of their last seven matches across all competitions (W2) including three of their last four at the Estadio de la Cerámica (W1). The Yellow Submarine were beaten 2-0 away at Real Betis in their last La Liga match and begin this round in third, level on points with Atlético Madrid in fourth, while another loss this weekend would see them suffer consecutive defeats in the competition for the first time since March 2025. The second loss in that particular run was against Real Madrid, the opposition that Villarreal manager Marcelino García has been beaten by the most times (17) in this competition.
Real Madrid were also in midweek UCL action, thrashing Monaco 6-1 to secure their seventh victory from their last nine competitive fixtures (L2). In La Liga, Los Blancos have lost just once away all season (W6, D3) and are now only one point behind leaders Barcelona who slipped up last weekend while Álvaro Arbeloa’s side recorded their fourth successive league victory. Another three points this weekend would see Madrid register five top-flight wins in a row for the second time this season and would also make it three competitive victories on the bounce for Arbeloa, which is much needed after he began his tenure with a shock Copa del Rey defeat.
Villarreal received exactly three yellow cards in three of their last four competitive games. Villarreal haven’t been beaten in any of their eight La Liga home games in which they scored first this season (W7, D1). There were 3-2 scorelines in three of Real Madrid’s last four competitive away games.
Gerard Moreno scored in Villarreal’s last home league game and has been involved in 11 goals against Real Madrid in La Liga (G6, A5) from 2014/15 onwards. Vinícius Júnior contributed to four goals on Tuesday evening (G1, A3) and has scored five times across his last five competitive games against Villarreal.
Santi Comesaña and Santiago Mouriño are suspended for Villarreal, as is Aurélien Tchouaméni for Real Madrid, who are also monitoring the fitness of Raúl Asencio.
