Slavia Prague’s strong start to this UEFA Europa League (UEL) campaign, when they beat Ludogorets Razgrad 2-0 on the opening day, has since petered out after a 1-1 draw with Ajax was followed by 1-0 defeats to Athletic Bilbao and Eintracht Frankfurt. That’s left Jindřich Trpišovský’s men near the bottom of the qualification spots ahead of this upcoming round of fixtures, but with three of their four remaining league phase games being played at home, they’ll be confident that they can surge up the table.
That’s because they’ve made the Fortuna Arena an incredibly difficult place to play, having lost only three of their previous 23 matches there on the continental circuit (W16, D4). The Red and Whites will be looking to leverage that home advantage for the visit of Fenerbahçe, a side they beat twice in February 2022, contributing to a proud record of just one defeat in six previous meetings overall with Turkish clubs (W3, D2).
Those two prior H2Hs are the only time that these clubs have met, with both games ending 3-2. Fenerbahçe’s history against Czech sides runs far deeper though, with their first such engagement being in 1983 and their most recent coming against Slovácko in August 2022, while they’ll be looking to eat into the deficit of losing half of their 14 matches against teams from the country (W5, D2).
Doing so will see Fenerbahçe extend the one-point lead they have over their hosts in the standings, but they too will have to pick themselves up after losing their last UEL outing 3-1 to AZ Alkmaar. José Mourinho’s men will however be full of confidence despite that loss, having won 4-0 and 6-2 domestically since then, and won’t be easily intimidated by the Slavia faithful having avoided defeat in 13 of their last 19 away European assignments (W9, D4).
Players to watch: Slavia’s Oscar Dorley has seen his last five goals for the club all come at home, a run that started after scoring away to Fenerbahçe in 2022. Looking to create havoc at the other end will likely be the legendary Edin Džeko, whose last seven goals for club and country have all arrived after half-time.
Hot stat: Slavia have seen six of their last seven European games produce fewer than 2.5 goals.
