New Roma boss Claudio Ranieri will be hoping his first win in charge – a 4-1 thumping of fellow Serie A strugglers Lecce – can be the kickstart the Giallorossi’s season badly needs. Not only did that help the capital club pull clear of the drop zone, but it could be crucial in building momentum ahead of their return to UEFA Europa League (UEL) action, as progression in that competition is far from assured (W1, D3, L1).
Roma will be aiming for a first set of back-to-back wins since April, so will be glad to be on home soil at the Stadio Olimpico where their only UEL win of the season came against Dynamo Kyiv (1-0). That forms part of their impressive run of ten wins across their last 13 home outings in the UEL (D2, L1), something Ranieri will hope to leverage considering that the Giallorossi have failed to score more than once in four of their last six games here in any competition.
Portuguese visitors Braga arrive in Rome a point above their hosts (W2, D1, L2), courtesy of an impressive 3-0 victory over Hoffenheim on matchday five. That was the second part of a four-match unbeaten run (W3, D1), and with each victory therein accompanied by a clean sheet, they’ll be no pushovers in the Italian capital.
Including the qualification phase, Braga have lost just once on the road in Europe this term (W2, D2), and are on a run of five competitive away matches without defeat (W4, D1). The visitors have opened the scoring in all five matches, including their last UEL away match against Elfsborg (D 1-1) and another quick start could help them beat Roma for the first time after previous two H2H defeats back in 2021 in this competition.
Players to watch: Paulo Dybala has netted five of his last six goals in the UEL before the break, with Roma winning five of his seven previous scoring appearances in this competition (L2). Braga’s Bruma has scored four goals across his last four matches, including the opener against Hoffenheim in the second minute.
Hot stat: There has been at least one goal inside the opening 20 minutes in six of Braga’s last eight matches.
