Real Madrid and Real Sociedad put seven-match unbeaten runs in La Liga on the line with the hosts trying to maintain their title challenge and the visitors aiming to stay in the hunt for a top-six finish. Real Madrid have won each of the last five league H2Hs, three of them without conceding, and they’ve only lost one of the last 18 La Liga meetings they hosted (W14, D3). Six of Real Madrid’s last seven league games produced at least 11 corners.

Real Madrid remain one point behind La Liga leaders Barcelona after working hard to beat Valencia 2-0 last Sunday for their seventh consecutive league victory, the last four of which saw them score exactly twice. They’ve therefore relied on significant defensive solidity, which is impressive considering the number of defenders Los Blancos have unavailable; none of their starting back four against Valencia were older than 22. Things continue to click with Álvaro Arbeloa in charge and they’ve won each of their last four home league matches, so fans at the Bernabéu will be in an expectant mood.

Real Sociedad arrive in the capital having brushed struggling Elche aside 3-1 last Saturday to finish the matchday just inside the top eight, boosting their European qualification hopes by going unbeaten in seven La Liga matches (W4, D3) although they haven’t managed an eight-game unbeaten top-flight streak since November 2021. A huge Copa del Rey semi-final clash against rivals Athletic Bilbao kept them occupied in midweek before they could shift their focus to improving their underwhelming travelling form, having won just two of their last 15 away league fixtures (D6, L7).

The team scoring first has won each of Real Madrid’s last nine home league fixtures (Madrid: W8, L1). Real Sociedad have conceded in each of their last 17 La Liga games, the longest ongoing such run among current Spanish top-flight teams. Eight of Real Sociedad’s last nine away league fixtures saw both teams score.

Real Madrid’s defenders have scored seven La Liga goals this term, a joint-league high pre-round, the latest of which was Álvaro Carreras’s opener against Valencia, and his last three goals all came after the 60th minute. All three of Orri Óskarsson’s goals for Real Sociedad this term were similarly late, arriving after the 65th minute.

As well as missing several defenders, Real Madrid will be unable to call upon Jude Bellingham or Rodrygo, both of whom recently suffered hamstring injuries. Real Sociedad’s Luka Sučić was injured against Elche and may not feature.
