Real Betis play their first home match of the new La Liga campaign, with Alavés providing the opposition at the Estadio de La Cartuja for this Friday night clash. Real Betis have found Alavés to be tricky opposition in recent years, not winning any of their previous five meetings (D3, L2), with the visitors winning this corresponding fixture 3-1 last season.

Real Betis made a frustrating start to their La Liga campaign on Monday as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to newly-promoted Elche. Boss Manuel Pellegrini will be eager to cure the hangover seemingly lingering from last season, with Monday’s disappointing result extending their winless league run to five games (D4, L1), including the end of the last campaign. As Betis seek to break back into the La Liga top four this season for the first time since 2004/05, Pellegrini will know they need to snap that run before long, but having drawn their first home league game of the season in three of the last four campaigns, doing so here is far from a foregone conclusion.

Eduardo Coudet made an ideal start to his first full campaign as Alavés manager with a 2-1 win against newly-promoted Levante, ending a sobering sequence of four successive opening day defeats in the top flight. The Basque outfit could now win their first two games of a La Liga season for the first time since the 2001/02 campaign, and given they finished seventh that season, optimism will undoubtedly be running high if they can spring a surprise in Andalusia.

Real Betis’ last 20 La Liga games saw both teams score. Real Betis have scored exactly once in four of their last five La Liga games. Ten of Alavés’ last 11 games have seen under 2.5 goals. Alavés haven’t conceded more than once in their last ten games.

Rodrigo Riquelme provided the assist for Aitor Ruibal’s opener against Elche, meaning he’s already equalled his La Liga goal contribution tally for the entirety of last season. Antonio Sivera doesn’t tend to be too busy in goal for Alavés, having made fewer than three saves in seven of his last nine appearances.

Isco is the biggest name on Real Betis’ long injury list, while Abde Ezzalzouli and Diego Llorente also missed the match against Elche. Alavés appear to be nearly at full-strength for this game.
