The quarter-final stage of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) continues with a rematch of the 2021 final as Brazilian outfit Palmeiras take on Premier League side Chelsea in Philadelphia. This is the second competitive meeting between Palmeiras and Chelsea after the English side won the 2021 CWC final 2-1 after extra time.

It has been close to plain sailing for the 2021 Club World Cup runners-up in this edition of the tournament after they overcame Brazilian rivals Botafogo in extra time of their Round of 16 clash to reach the last eight. Not only does that mean that they remain unbeaten at the tournament so far (W2, D2), but with just two goals conceded in total across those four matches, their defensive line is additionally proving very difficult to break down. It’s just as well they can remain defensively solid to stay in games because they haven’t scored before half-time at the Club World Cup yet.

Palmeiras defensive solidity is likely to be tested by Chelsea, especially as the Blues blew away Benfica 4-1 in their own Round of 16 tie, although they did need extra time to do so. That made it six wins in seven for Enzo Maresca’s side since beating Manchester United in mid-May, the last four of which came with multiple goal margins in the end. An unlucky omen could come from the fact that their only defeat in that time came against Brazilian opposition in the group stage, as they fell 3-1 to Flamengo.

Only three of Palmeiras last 15 matches saw both teams score. Three of Palmeiras’ four games at this tournament saw under 2.5 goals. Chelsea have scored after half-time in six of their last seven games. All four of the goals Chelsea have conceded at this Club World Cup arrived after the hour mark.

Chelsea’s Pedro Neto has been in fine form of late, netting in three consecutive matches for the first time in his senior club career. Palmeiras’ Paulinho will look to upstage him here as he has six goal contributions in his last five appearances (G3, A2) – all of which came from the bench.

Chelsea will be without suspended midfielder Moisés Caicedo, while defender Benoît Badiashile looks likely to miss out through injury. Palmeiras will be without Joaquín Piquerez and Gustavo Gómez who are both sidelined through suspension.
