AC Milan’s quest to win a second consecutive Supercoppa Italiana starts with a semi-final in the 38th edition against Napoli, whose last title in this competition came more than a decade ago. This will be the first-ever meeting between the sides in this competition. Milan have won four of their last eight H2Hs overall (D2, L2) – a run which includes a 2-1 victory at San Siro in September. Nine of Napoli’s last 11 encounters have featured under 2.5 goals in normal time.

Napoli travel to Saudi Arabia in sub-optimal form, as a 1-0 defeat to Udinese in Serie A on Sunday made it back-to-back losses in all competitions for the second time this season. The Partenopei are locked in a tight race to retain the Scudetto, with the top three clubs separated by just two points and will be looking to use the Supercoppa as a chance to recapture the form that had landed them five successive wins before those defeats. The Neapolitans have two titles in their five previous appearances in this competition and adding to that tally could hinge on ending a four-game run without a clean sheet which was preceded by six shutouts in seven competitive matches.

Milan relinquished top spot in Serie A to arch-rivals Inter Milan after a 2-2 draw with Sassuolo at the weekend, with five of the Rossoneri’s last 11 competitive games having ended all square (W5, L1) – a trend that will concern manager Massimiliano Allegri. Their lone defeat in that sequence came against Lazio in the Coppa Italia and incidentally their ticket to Saudi Arabia was booked after losing to Bologna in last season’s Coppa Italia final. Having conceded three goals before half-time in their last two matches, Milan will hope that a change in location will help their defence become more solid early in this contest.

Napoli have conceded only 2.87 corners per game in Serie A this season. None of Milan’s last 12 competitive outings have been decided by more than a one-goal margin. Five of Milan’s last seven matches in this competition have produced over 2.5 goals during regular time.

Rasmus Højlund has scored Napoli’s last two goals and including those, his last five club goals have come in three 2-1 victories, with the Dane getting the winner in all three matches. Christian Pulisic has netted three times in his last four Milan appearances and both scored and assisted in Milan’s 2-1 H2H victory earlier this season.

Napoli don’t seem to have any fresh absentees, while Matteo Gabbia is a doubt for Milan.
