Monza marked the start of a new year with a 3-2 win over Frosinone last weekend, putting behind them three straight scoring blanks (D1, L2). As they hover around the top half of the Serie A, their inability to build momentum has previously hindered their progress, as just once in the entire campaign have they won consecutive matches. Turning the tide with a win against leaders Inter Milan would not only be a significant morale booster, but would also avenge a 2-0 defeat in the opening round.
They would also need to manufacture a reversal of fortunes at the Stadio Brianteo, where they have won just one of their five most recent Serie A home games (D2, L2). Both of those defeats saw Monza concede the match opener within the first 15 minutes, and the hosts will be keen to avoid a repeat, even though this corresponding fixture last season saw them equalise twice (D 2-2).
Inter won 2-1 against Verona last weekend after a stoppage time match winner and a missed penalty for their opponents helped them win the unofficial ‘winter title’ for the 18th time in their history. On four of the five previous such occasions, the Nerazzurri went on to lift the Scudetto, and a win here would see them provisionally move five points clear at the top, solidifying hopes of extending that record.
It might not be that straightforward though, as Inter have struggled for consistency of late, highlighted by the fact they’ve registered consecutive wins just once across their last ten competitive games (W5, D4, L1). Two of those draws came from Serie A away assignments, but it’s perhaps unfair to focus solely on them as those results remain their only travelling blemishes across this league campaign (W7, D2).
Players to watch: Andrea Colpani has been a home game specialist for Monza, with his last six top-flight goals coming at this venue. Inter’s Nicolò Barella could be in for a busy game after registering a goal, assist or booking in four of his last five games (G1, A1, YC3).
