Two teams who are riding high in their own domestic leagues as well as in Europe, Lyon and Eintracht Frankfurt, meet on Thursday evening. Lyon, who begin this gameweek in fifth place in Ligue 1 and seventh in the UEFA Europa League (UEL), have been in fine form, winning each of their last three fixtures by a three-goal margin, and have lost only one of their last 14 (W9, D4) across all competitions.

That solitary defeat came in their last UEL home game against Beşiktaş (1-0) and followed a sequence of five successive victories, so head coach Pierre Sage should be wary of overconfidence ahead of this clash. Lyon do enjoy a slightly superior win-loss record against German teams as the designated hosts (W7, L6), but have won only one of their last six such matches (D2, L3).

Frankfurt, meanwhile, have an equal win-loss record away to French sides in UEFA competitions (W3, L3), so will be looking to tip that record in their favour at Parc Olympique Lyonnais. A victory could even see them top the table as they begin this round of fixtures level on points with Lazio in first place and Athletic Bilbao in second, but their form has suddenly dipped in the last week.

Prior to last Wednesday, Dino Toppmöller’s side were enjoying a seven-game winning streak and had lost just once in their 17 encounters (W13, D3). Since then however, they have suffered a 3-0 defeat to Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal and then drew 2-2 with lowly Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Fans of the Eagles should not be too despondent though, as this is only the second time all season that Frankfurt have failed to pick up a win in consecutive matches, and they responded with a European victory after the last instance.

Players to watch: Ainsley Maitland-Niles assisted Lyon’s first UEL goal of the campaign and has also set up a goal in their last game in both this competition and in Ligue 1. Omar Marmoush has been unstoppable of late, contributing to Frankfurt’s last four UEL goals (G2, A2).
