Levante continue to hurtle towards La Liga relegation and now have to tackle a Villarreal side struggling to retain their top-four position. This will be the first H2H meeting since 2021/22, but Levante have won five of seven competitive meetings at home since the start of 2015/16 (L2). Villarreal led by one goal at half-time in each of their five La Liga away wins this season.

Levante are in an ominous position on 18 points, still less than halfway to the threshold of 38 or more points that was required to survive each of the past four seasons. The mid-season change to Luís Castro is yet to pay off with the club winning only one of six La Liga matches (D2, L3) since his 3-0 debut win in Seville, with last round’s 2-0 loss at home to fellow relegation contenders Valencia especially concerning. Levante went into that game with a four-game unbeaten run at home (W1, D3) in this competition, so whilst they’ll be hoping the Valencia defeat was an anomaly, even a draw may not relieve the pressure that comes with starting this game six points adrift of safety.

Villarreal’s struggles in the second half of the season arguably hit a new low at the weekend when Marcelino’s 200th La Liga game in charge of the club was spoiled by a 2-1 defeat at Getafe, in what was their first and only league loss to any club currently outside the top five. Their bridge to fifth place has been reduced from seven points in the middle of January to just four at the end of the weekend thanks in part to their three-game winless run on the road in this competition (D1, L2), in which they were favourites against both Osasuna (D 2-2) and Getafe (L 2-1). With a game against lowly Valencia at home this coming weekend, the next several days could be crucial to Villarreal kickstarting their UEFA Champions League pursuit.

Seven of Levante’s last eight La Liga games produced 0-1 first-half goals. Levante’s last five La Liga losses were by a two-goal margin. Five of Villarreal’s six La Liga losses this season were by a two-goal margin.

Levante’s Karl Etta Eyong could be inspired by the sight of his former teammates as he continues searching to rediscover his formidable early season form that saw him score in four of his first five games for his new club. Georges Mikautadze continues to score regularly and last weekend was a rare exception to his record of winning seven of his last ten goalscoring appearances in all competitions.

Levante will be missing Kervin Arriaga (suspended) and Ugo Raghouber (injured). Gerard Moreno and Juan Foyth headline Villarreal’s list of absences.
